Working toward a renaissance of Fukushima, Tohoku and all Japan through our energy businesses, centered on lithium-ion batteries.
Shunzo Kojima
Human Resources General Manager
On that day, following an earthquake of a scale never experienced before, a huge tsunami engulfed many towns along the Tohoku coastline. Our company has many facilities in the region, and these also suffered. Koriyama City, the location of our headquarters, was severely damaged by the earthquake. The entire company rallied round, and thanks to great efforts by the whole workforce, we managed to resume production in April.Lithium-ion batteries are one of our most promising businesses, and it is extremely heartening to see the skill and commitment our workers bring to the task.
In 1991, Sony Energy Devices was the first company in the world to mass produce lithium-ion batteries, and we remain the leaders in this field.Lithium-ion batteries contribute to CO2 reduction, and this is a growth industry with great potential, supported by government backing*.
(*In FY2009 and FY2010, Sony Energy Devices was approved by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to receive subsidies as a company creating domestic low carbon jobs, reducing the use of rare earths, etc.)
In the aftermath of the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, there are calls both in Japan and worldwide for a re-evaluation of energy issues.
In practice, this means a move from nuclear power, which is highly efficient but also carries large risks, to sustainable, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and geothermal power.
Launched in April, 2011, our storage batteries (energy storage modules) created a worldwide trend and are having a major impact in a wide range of industries. We are deeply moved by the fact that we could announce this world changing technology from disaster-struck Fukushima. For us, this symbolizes our confidence in the renaissance of Fukushima, the Tohoku region, and all Japan.
Market requirements for batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries, are changing with extreme rapidity, and the every growing range of applications, from portable electronic devices, cell phones and storage batteries to car and motorcycle batteries, continues to create the need for new types of batteries.
We are a key company in the Sony Group, proud of the our DNA that drives us to go where no-one has gone before, to carve a role for ourselves in the world by developing and commercializing products no-one has thought of before. Can you imagine a future with such a company, helping to solve the world's energy problems, creating new types of batteries to support the lifestyles of tomorrow? The people we are looking for will be:
I look forward to working with you, and sharing a passion for excellence.
Join us, and see how batteries can change the world.
